George Bennett joins Outer Temple’s Business Clerking Team

Robert Rhodes QC and Anthony Lo Surdo SC act as judges for the Thailand Arbitration Center’s first International Mediation Competition

Outer Temple’s Robert Rhodes QC and Anthony Lo Surdo SC were judges for the Thailand Arbitration Center’s first International Mediation Competition. This event took place on Wednesday 20th July 2022. The Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC) organised the “1st Virtual International Mediation Competition 2022”. The competition aimed to unleash the potential of young mediators around the world as well as encouraging them to gain knowledge and a proper understanding of the usage of mediation skill. There were about a dozen judges for this event, from all over the world. Outer Temple Chambers participating in 10,000 Black Interns scheme

We are delighted to announce that Outer Temple Chambers have committed to host an intern as part of the Bar’s collective participation in the 10,000 Black Interns scheme. 10,000 Black Interns is a scheme that gives young black people the chance to work in a number of different chambers or legal organisations. It aims to help them gain new information, build their professional network, and to further develop their skills. Alex Haines and Courtney Step-Marsden instructed in mini-class action against the Islamic Corporation

Alex Haines and Courtney Step-Marsden have been instructed in a mini-class action against the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector before the Islamic Development Bank Group Administrative Tribunal. The newly established Islamic Development Bank Group Administrative Tribunal (IsDBGAT or Tribunal) is based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and hears cases brought by international civil servants who work at the Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDBG). Lucian ILIE has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the IBA under-40 Arbitration Group

David E. Grant QC and Anson Cheung successful in significant franchising case in the Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal has just handed down judgment in Dwyer (UK Franchising) Ltd v Fredbar Ltd & Bartlett [2022] EWCA Civ 889 in which David E. Grant QC and Anson Cheung appeared for the successful respondents. This is the most detailed consideration yet by the courts of the enforceability of post-termination restrictions in franchise agreements. Background to the Appeal The First Respondent, Fredbar Ltd, was a franchisee of the “Drain Doctor” brand licensed by the Appellant, Dwyer, which claimed to be the UK’s largest full-service network of emergency plumbing and drainage operations and part of the world’s largest home service franchise. Alex Haines instructed in sale of Chelsea Football Club sanction case

Outer Temple’s Alex Haines was instructed to provide expert advice on the sale of Chelsea FC and the implications of Russian sanctions imposed on club. Alex Haines – member of the Attorney General’s Civil Panel and Outer Temple’s specialist sanctions team – was instructed by the legal team at Her Majesty’s Treasury to advise on the sale of Chelsea Football Club and the proceeds thereof in light of the designation of its former owner, Roman Abramovich, under Russia sanctions.  On 10 March 2022, Mr Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK Government and, as a result, the Club operated within the confines and constraints caused by the imposition of sanctions.  The sanctions imposed on Mr Abramovich presented unique and unforeseen challenges…

Louis Weston acts pro bono for Spain rugby player in FER appeal

An Independent Appeal Committee has upheld a decision relating to breaches of player eligibility in an appeal lodged by the Spanish Rugby Federation (FER). Louis Weston acted pro bono to advise the accused rugby player who was subject to the allegations of fraud and dishonesty. Louis Weston, Head of the OTC Sports Law Group, acted pro bono along with Olivia Amos of Northridge Law.
