We are pleased to announce that Outer Temple Chambers is sponsoring a joint conference between the Spanish Personal Injury Lawyers Association (ARCS) and APIL. The event has been organised to take place in Granada, Spain, on 9 – 11 June, and it opens with a visit to the Alhambra Palace. The organisers advise that the conference is “designed to provide delegates with the up to date knowledge and tools needed to successfully look after their international Anglo-Spanish clients.” Click here for more details of the event.

Starting on Tuesday 12th April, over 90 hospital patients from each spinal injury centre across the UK and Ireland will participate in the Inter Spinal Unit Games, organised by WheelPower at Stoke Mandeville Stadium. Outer Temple Chambers is pleased to be one of the event’s sponsors and contribute to life quality improvement of paralysed people. Graham Woods, OTC Business Development Director, will attend the open morning on Tuesday. The Inter Spinal Unit Games are designed to introduce wheelchair sport to those who have recently had their lives changed after a traumatic injury or illness. David Smith, Business Development Director and founder of Legal Harmony (the charity choir competition for lawyers), is arranging a Charity Music Gala on 8th June 2016, at Central Hall Westminster. Lesley Garrett CBE and the National Symphony Orchestra, together with a massed choir of 180 solicitors, barristers and support staff, all singers from some of the most well-known national and international law firms and chambers, will perform a variety of much loved songs and opera classics. Outer Temple Chambers is pleased to announce that David Russell QC, is due to speak at The 8th European Conference on Tax Advisers’ Professional Affairs, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on Friday, 13 November 2015. The event is organised by The Confédération Fiscale Européenne (CFE), the European federation of tax advisers. “Big data – a threat to taxpayer rights?” is the topic of the conference and David Russell will speak in the session entitled “the new focus on taxpayer rights”. As the protection of taxpayers’ rights is the role of the tax adviser, the conference will ask whether this concept requires adaptation in a digital tax world based on fair competition, transparency and information exchange. The Care Act 2014 contains important new rights for children with care and support needs and their young carers as they approach adulthood. This session will explain the new duties on local authorities to carry out a “child’s needs assessment”, “child’s carers assessment” or “young carer’s assessment”. We will also cover other changes made in the Care Act to promote a smooth transition to adulthood, and how these relate to education, health and care plans under the Children and Families Act 2014.

Outer Temple invites you to its spring seminars on the Care Act 2014. We are running 4 seminars looking at different aspects of the Act. You are welcome to attend all or select the topics which appeal to you most. Care and support under the Care Act 2014 – an introduction to Part 1 of the Act 14th May 2015, 08:30 to 10:00. The Care Act repeals the old system under which there was a duty to charge for residential care services and a power to charge for residential care. Section 14 of the Act, new regulations and guidance set out the new system under which authorities have a power but not a duty to charge for care and support. This session will look at what is likely to carry over from the old system and what is new, including the “guiding principles” for charging, new deferred payments regime, the repeal of local authorities’ powers to place a charge, charges and “self funders” and possible charging of carers. We will also look forward to the implementation of the “care cap” in 2016.
