John McKendrick QC returns to practice in London in July 2018

John McKendrick QC will return to full time practice at Outer Temple Chambers on 14 July 2018, with a wealth of experience after having served as the Attorney General and DPP of the Caribbean island of Anguilla between 2016 and 2018. John was called to the BVI in 2013 and, as a fluent Spanish speaker, he has long-standing connections across the Caribbean and wider Latin America. We are delighted to announce that Ian Denham and Alex Haines have joined Outer Temple Chambers, with Ian to work across our Personal Injury practice area and Alex to join the Business department. James Leonard appears at the Grenfell Tower Public Inquiry

James Leonard appeared at the Grenfell Tower Public Inquiry in London on the 6th June 2018 and made an Opening Statement on behalf of CS Stokes Associates Limited, one of the Core Participants. James Counsell QC successful in Bar Tribunal disciplinary appeal

James Counsell QC successful for BSB, in an appeal against a finding of professional misconduct by Howard Godfrey QC, the Administrative Court (Lady Justice Sharp and Mr justice Spencer) rejected an argument that, in making disparaging remarks about the victim of a sexual assault, whilst acting for the abuser in an appeal against conviction and sentence, Mr Godfrey, a criminal silk for 25 years, was not guilty of professional misconduct. OTC instructed in new pensions prosecution

Tim Green appeared on behalf of The Pensions Regulator at Derby Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 7 June in a prosecution arising out of the misuse of the automatic enrolment scheme for workplace pensions by a national employer. Eight defendants, including two company directors and the company itself, all pleaded guilty. The case was committed to the Derby Crown Court for sentence later this summer. Show them who’s boss – employment tribunal boot camp for employers

On Thursday 7 June, members appeared in a mock-tribunal developed and organised by Excello Law, in conjunction with Outer Temple Chambers and in front of a large number of corporate clients. Having found that the relevant decision takers in respect of the Claimant’s dismissal and appeal had in mind both that he had been a nuisance in his campaigning and trade union activities and the fact of his having made protected disclosures, the ET needed to engage with the question which had been the real reason or principal reason for the dismissal? Although it had stated it had found that the reason for dismissal had been the Claimant’s protected disclosures, there was nothing to demonstrate it had considered the alternative – that the decision takers’ view of the Claimant as a nuisance was the principal reason. Michael Bowes QC successfully prosecutes parachute attempted murder case

Michael Bowes QC has successfully prosecuted Emile Cilliers for attempting to murder his wife by sabotaging her parachute, as well as attempting to kill her by means of a gas explosion and recklessly endangering the lives of his children. Cilliers was convicted at Winchester Crown Court on 24 May 2018 and will be sentenced by Mr Justice Sweeney on 15 June 2018. To read more details about this case, please click here.

Pensions expert Philip Stear joins Outer Temple Chambers

Outer Temple Chambers are delighted to announce that pensions partner and expert, Philip Stear has accepted an offer to join Chambers in the autumn of 2018. Philip has specialised in pensions law at Travers Smith for over 20 years, becoming a partner there in 2005.
